Özet: Today, with the rapid change in many areas like technological opportunities and access to information, the search for religious solutions to the problems arose with these changes has led to different interpretations. In the face of these problems, there have been several forms of interpretation that showed themselves with a strict commitment to the tradition as well as some radical interpretations adopting the idea that religious commands should be renewed to find solutions to the paradoxes in the present age. With this study, the purpose was to determine the perception of the students studying at higher education institutions on religious studies about innovation in religion, the factors affecting the perception of innovation in religion, and to identify whether there is a relation between the tendency to think critically and the traditional-innovative approach to religion. The religious formation received by the students of the Faculty of Theology and the fact that they are going to be the religious officials in the future, make it important to detect their perspectives. In this study, which was designed in quantitative fashion, the “Innovation in Religion Scale” that was developed by Horozcu (2019), and the “Critical Thinking Tendency” Scale that was adapted to Turkish by Demircioğlu and Kilmen (2014) were used. The scales were applied to the sample group of 364 students who were selected from the universe of Necmettin Erbakan University, Ahmet Keleşoğlu Theological Faculty; and the data were analyzed and interpreted. As a result of the interpretation of the findings, it was concluded that the students who participated in the sampling did not have a strict-traditional or radically-innovative approach. Although a significant difference was detected between some of the independent variables that were identified for the study and the perception of innovation in religion, no significant relation was detected between the tendency to think critically and the innovative perspective on religious tradition. As a result of the findings and interpretations that were obtained in the present study, various suggestions were presented.
