Özet: Examining independent cinema requires a tough classification process. It is easy to distinguish mainstream films but distinguishing independent films is complex. Which films can be considered independent? Who or what independent cinema is independent from? Is it possible to discuss about independent cinema in a country where the cinema industry is heavily influenced by foreigners or when the industry is under total government control? These types of questions are the starting points that can’t be ignored when examining Chinese independent filmmaking. Using descriptive analysis method, in this work Chinese cinema will be examined from its beginning to 2000’s and effects of the changing conditions on cinema will be discussed. This examination shows us that for various reasons producing independent films in China was not possible until 1980’s and independent filmmaking process requires certain conditions.
