Özet: The aim of this study was to investigate the role of gender on the changes of grip and pinch strength with aging. Fifty elderly who stayed at Akyurt Resthouse, aged >60 years and 50 university student aged 18-24 years from Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation were included in this study. Age, gender, hand dominance and body mass index of participants were recorded. Grip and pinch strength of both hand assessed by J Tech Computerized Functional Capacity Evaluation System in a position which was standardized by Association of American Hand Therapists. The means of grip and pinch strength were compared on both genders of young and older persons. The mean age of elderly was 78, 44±9, 39 years and young person’s was 21, 64±1, 41 years. Thirty-five (70%) of elderly and 34 (%68) of young persons were women. It was found that grip strength of older men was less than young men and pinch strength of older men was more than young men (p<.05). Grip strength of young women was found more than older women. There was a meaningful difference that pinch strength of older women was more than young women (p<.05). As a conclusion grip strength is decreased with aging. But it was determined that this decline was less in older men than older women. Pinch strength was not affected with aging on the contrary it was seen elderly was more strength than young people. Especially increase of pinch strength of elderly women shows that ability domains changed with gender may affect strength. This result also shows that fine dexterity training may affect strength
