Özet: Phytophthora species cause various diseases on apples (Malus spp.) including collar rot, crown rot, root rot and fruit rot. Root and crown rots are the most widespread diseases appear everywhere apple is grown. Fruit rots occur in places having rainy and cool summers. Thirteen Phytophthora species have been reported to cause diseases on apples. These are; Phytophthora cactorum, P. cambivora, P. cinnamomi, P. citricola, P. citrophthora, P. cryptogea, P. drechsleri, P. gonapodyides, P. megasperma, P. nicotiana, P. palmivora, P. rosacearum, and P. syringae. Only one of these species; P. cactorum was also recorded in Turkey. In this review, characteristics of these Phytophthora species and diseases they cause are described.
