Özet: The law in the Ottoman Empire had bilateral mechanism. On the one hand the rules taking its base from sharia and on the other hand practices of örf, run accordingliy. Kadıs, because of this, while imposing punishment, tried to remain within the border of both sharia and law text, also previous practices. On the other hand, the self-protection mechanism of the society stepped in when the crime became dangerous for the community and with the help of kadı the society tried to be kept in an order. This article aims to evaluate the reflex of both the judicial power of the state in the province and the society by the way of examining the sample events related to murder, robbery, brigandage, adultery that took place in Ayıntab in the 18th century.
