Özet: Jerusalem, where the first qibla of Islam Al-Aqsa Mosque is located and where Prophet Mohammad’s ascension took place, is one of the holy sites for Muslims. Being a holy site also for other Abrahamic religions, Jerusalem’s control was taken over from the Ottomans by the English in 1917, and it fell into the hands of Israel in 1967. Palestine, turning into an area of conflict which could not be shared after that date, has become just like an “exam paper in front of all believers” in CahitZarifoğlu’s words. When various works written by modern poets and authors of Turkish and Arabic literatures on loss of Jerusalem are considered, it is seen that mourning, hope and resistance are central themes in the works of Turkish poets such as Cahit Zarifoğlu, Sezai Karakoç, Nuri Pakdil, Mehmet Akif İnan and Arif Ay, and Arabic poets like Nizar Qabbani, Mahmud Derviş and Adonis. Thus, poetry becomes a big power that would mobilize masses in the hands of poets. In his poem Alınyazısı Saati/Kudüs(“the Hour of Fate/Jerusalem”), Sezai Karakoç states with pain that Jerusalem, where there are bombs, planes, tanks are, turned from a city “made in heavens” into “a city of earth.” Cahit Zarifoğlu, in his poems ?Soru İşaretlerinden Biri (“? One of Question Marks”) and Daralan Vakitler (“Times Running Out”), invites Muslims to resist in order to have Jerusalem again. Zarifoğlu addresses people who are afraid and have love for money and invites them to become martyrs for the sake of Palestine and Jerusalem. Known for his political poems, Nizar Qabbani, while covering mourning and a secret hope in his poem named Al-Quds (“Jerusalem”), tries to revive resistance and hope in his poem named Guerilla Notices on Israel’s Walls. In summary, Turkish and Arabic poets, taking their power from Islam, call all Muslims to resistance on the way for Jerusalem via poetry. When that day comes, mourning will be left behind, and only hope and revival will exist.
