Özet: Aim: The research was conducted as a descriptive study to evaluate the attitude of nursing students on patient safety and medical errors. Materials and methods: The sample of the study was composed of 415 voluntary nursing students on May-June 2017. The data of the study were collected by the researcher using a form developed according to the relevant literature and Medical Error Tendency Scale in Nursing. Results:The average age of nursing students who participated in the study was 20.99±1.94 and 89.9 % of them were female. Of nursing student included in the study, 89.9% reported that events which threaten patient safety were not reported, 37.8% reported that they made medical errors during their clinical training, 82.9% reported that they reported to the nurse executive when they made a medical error, 98.6% were afraid to report when they made a medical error; 27% reported that they did not want to report a medical error when it was noticed and corrected without affecting the patient. Total item score for the Medical Error Tendency Scale is 4.44±0.55. It was determined that mean item score of the sub-dimensions of inventory is 4.47±0.58 for “Medicine and Transfusion Practices” dimension, 4.49±0.59 for “Prevention of Infections” dimension, 4.45±0.67 for “Prevention of Falls” dimension, 4.31±0.66 for “Patient Monitoring and Material Safety” dimension, and 4.38±0.78 for “Communication” dimension, respectively. There was a statistically significant difference between encountered medical error of the nursing students and the sub-dimension of “Medicine and Transfusion Practices” (p=0.01), “Prevention of Infections” (p=0.046), “Patient Monitoring and Material Safety” (p=0.01). Conclusion and Suggestions: According to the findings of the study, it was found that the medical error tendency of nursing students was low and the medical error reporting rate was high. Although the high rate of error reporting seem to be a good thing, the important subject is to prevent mistakes without making them. In this context, it may be recommended to conduct trainings for nursing students to prevent medical errors and raise awareness about patient safety during their education.
