Özet: Major urban investments so called “Mega Project” have become extensively introduced to cities of developed and developing countries in the last 20 years. Due to the defiency of economic, technical and social infrastructures in cities of underdeveloped countries, most of the public resources are devoted to major urban projects. This results in a lack of adequate provision of necessary urban services and the problem of low quality of urban life. In addition local governments face financial deficiencies. This study investigates processes of 11 mega projects; some are planned but not implemented, some are implemented and while some of them are canceled. Mega projects are subsequently articulated to the plans, although they receive criticism in Turkish planning practice and theoretical studies and do not conform to the integrity of the physical plans. Within the scope of this study, how planning approaches and strategies can be developed and discussed against mega projects.
