Özet: In the spatial segregation discussions, while race, ethnicity and class-based differences were discussed, with the new dynamics in social life, factors such as social status, cultural level and lifestyle were included in the discussions. In this study, spatial segregation which produce and sustain by urban policies and society was analyzed in Karaköy district of Istanbul. As a result of the expansion of the culture and art field in Karaköy, the Galataport Project and events throughout Beyoğlu, Karaköy, which includes different sectors, started to host social classes/groups together but in different areas. In this research, it is revealed that although it has economic basis, segregation in Karaköy is based on Bourdieus’ capitals. Cultural capital was the main determinant of the segregation. In the case study involving 36 in-depth interviews and observations, walking method was developed spontaneously during the research. Within the walks, the participants gave information about their perceptions on Karaköy and the spatial segregation of the neighborhood were mapped. In this context the study contributes to the discussion of new methodological approaches in urban studies. The imaginary boundaries that emerge with the walks are important in terms of showing the relationship that people established with the urban space and society.
