Özet: This introductory article investigates the past and present of urban studies.  In the first part of the article, the major paradigms that emerged starting the 19th century up to today are briefly introduced, and hence the changes in how the city is theorezied and understood, that is, the paradigmatic changes in urban studies are demonstrated.  By doing so, it is aimed to place urban studies in a historical pespective.  In this framework, the views of F. Engels about the city as the emdium that reproduces class inequality, and G. Simmel about the city that produces a specific culture, the Chicago School of Urban Studies in which R. Park, E. Burgess and R. McKenzie formulated the Human Ecology paradigm, the views of  L. Wirth in the same school about urbanism as a way of life, the Urban Political Economy paradigm elaborated mainly by D. Harvey and M. Castells, the views of H. Lefebvre in which the city is seen as the new agent of revolutionary change, and finally the post-modern urban studies paradigm constructed on identity and representation are briefly presented.  In the second part, the main issues that have emerged under the dynamics of globalization and neoliberalism, along with technological advancements, are problematized; and the contours of a new paradigm, which is directed to understand and explain the new problems created by these dynamics, are drawn.
