Özet: Sultanahmet Square has always been a square throughout the history. This square, one of the most important venues of Istanbul’s social and ceremonial life, was the site for the chariot races; it was the home for horse races, polo games, ceremonies, wedding festivals and public entertainment as well as riots. By the end of the eighteenth that century the square had lost its importance for festivities in comparison to preceding centuries but in the nineteenth century it became the focus of attention again. About the middle of the century, archaeological investigations and restoration of the monuments here started. In addition, it was seen that the square was not tidy and full of rubble around; thus, some work was done. Istanbul’s first park created in 1854. Sultanahmet Square hosted the first Ottoman exhibition building that was inaugurated in 1863. Ottoman restoration of the Colossus as evidenced in the archive documents was completed about the middle of 1895. The most important landscaping work at the square was conducted during the course of the construction of the German Fountain which was inaugurated in 1901. The documents dated, 1899, lists the work to be done at the square. This paper traces the history of the Sultanahmet Square in 19th century using primary documents from the Ottoman State Archive.
