Özet: This study seeks to find out the influence of gentrification on retail premises after 1980 in Istanbul. Cihangir is chosen as research area due to its priority in gentrification process in Istanbul. In the article first, the changing economic structure after 1970, and the new middle classes will be analyzed by looking at the transformation of cities/central areas and examples of gentrification periods in the world. Afterwards, the effects of this global phenomenon in Turkey and Istanbul will be examined. Gentrification process and its consequent changes in Cihangir will be studied in the context of the historical development of the neighbourhood together with the social and spatial outcomes of gentrification. Therefore, the effects of gentrification on the neighbourhood’s commercial profile are investigated. In the study, fourteen business firms, which have experienced the urban changes in Cihangir, are examined through in-depth interviews. As a result the changing commercial profile of the neighbourhood is revealed.
