Özet: The aim of this paper is to discuss the oldest social settlement in the world called “Fuggerei” in the city of Augsburg, in terms of the concepts ideal life and city, through the light of “Utopia” written by Thomas More in 1516 which also designates the period in which the construction of the settlement had taken place. The existence of this settlement for 500 years, under the same general rules and physical conditions, makes it both real and utopian. This example will both provide a close look on the ideas of its period and bring an uncommon example into discussion which focuses on utopia and the city. As a result, the paper correlates a number of facts like economy and social life in 16th century, early period of capitalist consciousness, Christianity and Reformist movement, philanthropy and the construction of the housing for the poor in addition to the concept of utopia.
