Özet: This article examines urban segregation and forms of spatial clustering caused by urban segregation. Urban segregation seems to be an inevitable outcome due an urban landscape fragmented by economic relations and inequalities as well as ethnic, religious, political and cultural differences. This trend results in creation of urban zones by individuals who identify themselves with various class, religious, and regional identities. This article discusses the following forms of urban segregation in detail: slum, ghetto, enclave and suburb. These concepts are also compared with gecekondu, the peculiar form of urban clustering in Turkey, and the differences and similarities between them are discussed. Hence, this article, in addition to evaluating the world literature on urban segregation and concentration, also seeks to contribute urban studies in Turkey that tackle with these questions.
