Özet: In 1990’s, «gated community» as a new type of settlement has entered into the Turkish urban areas and since then proliferated rapidly under very different styles. The spatial specificities of this type of housing settlements vary according to the size, the geographical conditions, the social profiles of the settlers and their outside neighbors, as well as the relation between those two parties, and commercial and urban services available in the area. These variables shape each and every “gated community” and create different formations. This study focuses on Soğuksu Area in Beykoz District of İstanbul where the first examples of gated communities were built and compares their situation at the beginning and today with an evolutionary point of view.
