Özet: 1980s and 1990s indicate a period in which globalization has shaped the economy and the space while cities gaining new functions and spreading out of the city boundaries. They have been forced to compete with other cities through mega urban projects and have transformed by the pressure of market economy. This transformation process has produced new residential and work areas at fringes according to the availability of transportation and other urban technical infrastructure defining a new rural-urban relation within the sprawl areas. Frog type leaps of the congested and unmanageable central functions have caused patched developments at urban fringes called as sprawl affecting the rural areas in a positive or threatening manner. Improvements of infrastructure, construction of highways, building new residential, work and commercial functions are spontaneous responses of the mentioned transformation at fringe areas. In this study, urban sprawl is examined as an inseparable aspect of metropolitan urbanization process. Type and context of transformation that have been experienced after 1980s at the fringe rural settlements areas of Ankara Metropolitan Area is assessed in case of Pursaklar.
