Özet: This study aims to discuss the nature of the relationships between belongings of people and spatial transformation in Mardin. “Fixity” attributed to architecture and cultural diversity of Mardin prevents understanding of changeability, historicity and problems of sociality and culture. In this respect, the article seeks to reveal problems of speaking about cultural diversity, architecture and identities through “fixity”, “essence” and “authenticity”. It attempts to analyze cultural diversity and identity not only as ethnic and religious domains, but also as intersections with existing social inequalities based on class and gender differences. To achieve this goal, Mardin’s transformation process from “traditional city” to its current form will be examined by evaluating the spatial transformation and demographical change the city underwent during the following periods: Tanzimat Firman process, 1923-46, 1946-80, post 1980 process.
