Özet: By situating itself beyond the populist anxieties and within the bounds of a strictly academic approach, this article seeks to understand and explain the Mardin-Syriac binary which, in recent years, has entered the public debate through the slogans of multiculturalism and religious diversity. It will assess the frequent and dense intersecting of city and community mainly through the perceptions of the Syriacs but without overlooking the existence of other communities. By touching on the relations between various communities that city life has brought about, the article will examine the role of differences in the valorization of the “city-community” relation via the Syrian Orthodox community whose existence has made itself felt in Mardin throughout history.
