Özet: Poverty is not only a problem for developing countries but also a problem for the developed ones due to the advancement of transportation means. Although it is generally agreed that poverty is a global problem, the perceptions of people about poverty are different from each other.  Therefore there is not any generally agreed definition of poverty. The concept of poverty is used in different meanings according to location, region and individual.  For the convenience of the usage of the term, three types of poverty is mentioned: absolute poverty, relative poverty and humanitarian poverty. The causes of poverty differ according to the conditions of the country or region. Although economic, political, social, cultural and ecological causes for poverty can be mentioned, these causes are interrelated.  Economic causes of poverty such as insufficiency of production, problem of distribution are usually brought to the fore. However, other factors are also directly related to poverty. Environment and poverty relationship is rarely dealt with in the literature. However, there is a direct relationship between poverty and environmental problems. It is a typical indicator of this relationship is that urban poor’s live in places which are problematic in terms of environment.
