Özet: In the progressive line of modernism, some of the main focuses of modernist literature are the restriction of autonomous act and the self that is cornered by majority. Yusuf Atılgan is one of the most important names who work upon this duality between self and society thoroughly in Turkish Literature. His characters find themselves in periphery either out of their own wishes or because they are pushed there. In his short story “Bodur Minareden Öte”, which is also the focus of this article, we follow the narrator-protagonist’s quest to situate himself in his life that is suppressed by the norms of the society. The city that is one of the most essential agents of the encirclement that modernism brings forms the elbow room and fighting space of the character. The claim of this article is that the narrator-protagonist’s story of situating/building himself is given by experiencing the spaces which the city provides and attempting to surpass them. To prove this, firstly the relevance of spaces to the personal and public relations will be questioned, then, within the given spaces in the short story –dwarf minaret, house, underground, ship- the use of space will be discussed
