Özet: This study searches for the urban morphological transformations in intramural Galata beginning from the second half of the 19th century to the present day focusing on the area between Karaköy and Tophane and examines the impact of political and social dynamics of the period on urban and architectural forms and the types of usages in the urban tissue. The study aims to contribute to the discernment and judgement of today’s transformations and the development of the area by documenting the phases of the urban spatial and usage type changes in an urban texture where the physical traces are mostly erased. Karaköy has been the center of the city where the impacts of Ottoman Modernization in political, spatial and social aspects with an expanding volume of finance and trade since the midst of the 19th Century. Demolition of the Genoisean Walls, widenning of the roads and Karaköy Square, creation of new building lots, building of the port and the new Galata bridge are some of the main operations of the new Municipality of Beyoglu aiming to modernize the city. The area has faced a radical change in morphological aspect in the frame of 1956-59Menderes Transformations. The road parallel to the sea which links the shores of Bosphorus and Karaköy beginning from Azapkapı on the West passing through Karaköy Square- Kemeraltı Street and Tophane has been widened by the demolition of mostly the historic buildings, the small urban lots in the area have been demolished to create wide and clean roads to provide better flow of the traffic. Although Karaköy still carries its earlist characteristics of being a port city today providing space for encountering, trading, and transition functions for different cultures the designing of new mega projects led by the the neo-liberal global approaches causes morphological, typological and social transformations and gentrification of the area creating the need of discussion and investigation.
