Özet: Rapid urban transformation in Turkish cities in recent years has neglected and devastated the local values. Traditional cities and urban environments can be evaluated under the sustainability principles and the positive qualities can be improved by providing some clues for contemporary planning and design. In this framework, this paper explores traditional Turkish cities in different bio-regions, under the sustainable planning and design principles within the framework of eco-cultural logic. Land-use, accessibility, open and green spaces, production, water management, social cohesion and traditional architecture are the key themes for this frame. Consequently, this paper analyzes the sustainable features of traditional Turkish cities. Sustainable urban planning and design principles can be listed as: compact urban layout, mixed land use, pedestrian prioritized street pattern, climate friendly design, water and storm water management, open-green space system and urban agriculture. Self-sufficiency in food and production, sense of community, street life and social cohesion principles are also important for social sustainability. This paper emphasizes organic layout in respect to topography and climate in traditional Turkish settlements, the concept of neighborhood, bazaar, studio and residence in the mixed use pattern, sense of community and solidarity in the social sustainability. Eco-cultural logic emphasizes sustainable design as preservation of culture. This paper gives many examples of traditional Turkish houses in different bio-regions and climate zones. Alternative construction materials and energy efficient use in housing typologies are also considered. The paper delivers the eco-cultural conservation principles in the conclusion.
