Özet: The scope and the major argument of the study is about the role of monumental trees- both as subject and the object - in social and spatial production. The importance of monumental trees for Bursa apparently originates from their potential for contributing to such a production process. For this reason, a discussion inspired by the Bursa case is thought to be beneficial for enhancing the empirical and conceptual frame of the pertinent literature. Within this perspective, the study will comprise the establishment story of an empire retrospectively and its historical-cultural-spatial continuation to the future prospectively. In this context, the basic motivation of the study is to show that monumental trees may also be handled with a perspective that does not exclude socio-spatial dimension and accordingly the issues of memory-identity and history. In addition, with respect to mystical, folkloric, physical and primarily historical features of selected monumental trees, the study targets to depict the context in which the socio-cultural memory and identity is shaped, and the kind of conceptual and theoretical memory assumption that enables such a construction. Methodologically, the study benefits from reports prepared by various institutions, visual documents, satellite images, pictures and various literary scripts, and proposes a qualitative outcome. Finally, it has been asserted that the monumental trees comprise a significant place in the construction of socio-spatial memory, identity, daily life and history of Bursa, and that this force of monumental trees is not an outcome of a natural/unconscious process but a conscious/planned result of the humanly serene intervention of old peaceful times. Furthermore, it has been observed that urban memory with its mystical, folkloric, physical and historical features does not only depend on physical facts but also on bioecological and socio-cultural facts that play a significant role in the production of urban memory and identity.
