Özet: It is possible to see the traces of different periods, when walking through the streets of Historic Peninsula. Hence, Istanbul owes its uniqueness to this stratification. On the other hand, severe effects of urbanization impaired the original urban, architectural, social and cultural structure of the city, causing many changes. Kumkapı, located within the Historic Peninsula at the seaside of Marmara Sea, has this rich potential together with its multi-layered and multi-faceted cultural background to be conserved, developed and sustained. Through this article, the aim is to analyse these so-called changes at environmental scale in the last two decades from 1994 to 2013 in Kumkapı, as one of the important historic quarters in the Historic Peninsula of İstanbul, based on the environmental data from two different master’s theses (by Selin Birgül at IKU in 2013 and Pınar Giritlioğlu Özden at ITU in 1994), with the additional necessary urban developmental updates through the topics of 'land use, 'number of floors', 'structural system and material use' and 'building condition'. The comparative quantitative data stated for these main topics points the almost fateful abandonment of Kumkapı through unqualified implementations of 'conservation' in one of the world's major historical cities, as a result a series of negative changes and intense loss of authenticity. The change of old inhabitants together with the changing land use, has caused significant loss of values in the area under the effect of inadequate conservation approaches and insensible new users under the severe effects of large-scale urban projects away from conservation.
