Özet: Language, which is generally defined as the system that enables the transfer of feelings, thoughts, wishes and desires from one person to another by using common sound and meaning elements adopted by a certain society, is the most important element that makes a community a nation. The language, which coexists with the nation to which it belongs and is inevitably influenced by the different cultures and civilizations that the nation has encountered, is regarded as the summary of the history of its own nation for centuries. Professor Orhan Okay who did not lose his language sensitivity for a moment throughout his academic and daily life, stands out as a person who opens the horizon not only with the language he uses, but also with his thoughts on language. He considers language consisting of words and rules as a sub-category of the universal language like nature and art that appeals to all humanity. In addition, he defends that the society in which language is used should continue its life in parallel with the evolving and changing structure of the society, without being exposed to artificial interventions. Otherwise, he points out that the natural integrity of the language will deteriorate, and even the functions of ensuring the understanding of individuals and reflecting the history of society will be damaged. This article, by reflecting the basic thoughts of Orhan Okay on language, attempts to articulate positive and negative opinions about language policies that took place in the recent past, many of which Okay himself witnessed by living. Besides, Okay’s perspectives on the activities of the Turkish Language Association, of which he was also a member, since the 1930s within the scope of the mentioned policies will be brought to attention, and his thoughts on foreign language and education in foreign language will be reflected.
