Özet: The city of Jerusalem is distinguished in terms of its religious, political and strategic importance in the “Middle East” region by a number of characteristics that are unable to be found in any other city. On the one hand, it is a sacred city in the eyes of all monotheistic religions. On the other hand, it is a city that tempts all regional and international powers due to its strategic importance in the balance of powers in the Middle East and the world, as well as for its religious, historical and cultural depth. Therefore, this city has remained a space known for its diversity of religions and their coexistence with each other over the ages, yet at the same time it is the focus of a long struggle between different regional and international powers, each attempting to dominate it to control the strategic and cultural depth of the Middle East region. The intensity of the conflict over Jerusalem increased in particular during the Seljuk and Artuqid era, as this era represented a new turning point in the history of the region and Jerusalem alike. New balances emerged, which had a great impact on the next phase of the development of Jerusalem both internally and in its relationships with outside powers. Therefore, we will try in this paper to provide an analytical reading of the importance of Bayt al-Maqdis during the era of the Artuqids as they played a prominent role in the history of the Holy City. There will be a special focus on the reign of Commander Artuq Bey, the governor of Jerusalem during the Seljuk era that had a prominent role in protecting this city and the wider region from forces that posed a risk to it. This paper will address this topic on three main axes: 1- The emergence of Artuqids and their influence on the map of equilibria in the “Middle East” region. 2- The relationship of the Artuqids with the Holy City and its developments. 3- Jerusalem and the role of the Artuqids in the Crusades.
