Özet: Background: Suicidal behavior, which is defined as ending the life of the individual voluntarily, is both a personal and social problem with its economic, cultural, social and legal aspects. The increase in suicide attempts in our country is remarkable as in all over the world. The aim of this study was to determine the risk factors by examining the time of suicide attempt and sociodemographic characteristics of the patients who admitted to the emergency departments (ED) suffered from the suicide attempt. Material-methods: This retrospective, observational study included data from patients who were admitted to the ED for 6-year period between 2013-2018 years. In the study, data of the ED suicide attempt form of 7 public hospitals in the province were scanned and age, gender, marital status, educational status and month and year of suicide attempt were recorded. Data were recorded in SPSS 22.0 (Armonk, NY: IBM Corp.) programme. Categorical measurements were recorded as number and percentage, and continuous measurements were recorded as mean and standard deviation. p <0.05 was accepted as statistically significant. Results: A total of 230 patients were included in the study. 32% (n = 76) of the patients were admitted to center state hospital; 68% (n = 154) of the patients admitted to district state hospitals. 69.5% (n = 160) of the patients were between 16-24 years of age. 79.1% (n = 182) of the patients were female and 65.2% (n = 150) were single. 42.2% (n = 97) were primary school graduates and 10.0% (n = 23) were illiterate. The most common presentation was in 2015 with 23.9% (n = 55). Most of the patients included in the study were admitted to hospital in June with 15% (n = 33). Conclusion: It is not always possible to pay attention to the psychosocial aspect of cases with suicide attempts in crowded ED. However, it is important to be aware of the risk factors to decrease the number of suicide attempts, that is among the most common causes of death in our country especially in the young age group, and consult with a psychiatrist.
