Özet: This article concerns the 13 Tumuli, 2 Simple Tombs and one Terrace Tomb, which are the latest discoveries of the oldest known tomb typology of the Western Lycian Region and are thought to have been constructed in the Archaic and Early Classical Period. These have been identified in the Karapınar location of the Patlangıç district of Fethiye county within Muğla Province. Within the scope of our investigations an attempt was made to determine the tomb typology of the Karapınar Necropolis, the typological features of these tombs were examined and an analogical comparison of the stone tumuli of the Lycian Region was undertaken. In the Karapınar Necropolis, 3 different types of graves were determined. Type 1 tombs are tumuli surrounded by a border of large and small polygonal stones in which monumentality is prioritized. Type 2 tombs are simple graves that were partially opened into the natural cavities in the bedrock or in the bedrock floor and with some of them constructed from dressed stones, rectangular in form, built by covering the burial places of different depths with stone slabs, and which provide weaker markers for the inhabitants. Type 3 tombs consist of a rectangular-planned surrounding wall and grave chambers that are graded along the contours of the slopes on which they are found. Through our research on the Karapınar Necropolis new data concerning the chrono-logical development of the Lycian burial tradition, construction techniques and settlement patterns makes a contribution to the information concerning these subjects.
