The effect of tai-chi on internal-external locus of control levels in primary school students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder

Özet: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of Tai chi (TC) program participation on the levels of internal and external locus of control of student children with Attention- Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The TC group consisted of 6 boys and 6 girls, 12 students in total, ages are between 7 and 12. The same number of boy and girl students with the same age range took part in control group (KG). TC group participated in Tai Chi Form-24, three days a week for a 45 minute session during 16 weeks. At the same time, the participants of KG continued their usual lives. The influence process of TC was identified by 3 measurements; pre, mid and post-test. Nowicki-Strickland Locus of Control Scale for determining the control locuses of participants was used. While paired and independent t-test was used in parametric groups, Wilcoxon Test was used in parametric groups for comparisons. For correlations, The Pearson Correlation test was applied. In TC group, the scores of pre, mid and post test showed significant differences in the factors of “destiny” and “success”. According to correlation test, there are significant relations between family relations and superstition, family relations and destiny, success and superstition. As a result TC may be used in the treatment of ADHD. Yet, some further researches are necessary.
