Özet: The purpose of this study was to examine the Self-Standards Model of Cognitive Dissonance (SSM) in order to explain the contradictions between different perspectives about role of the “self” in cognitive dissonance processes.  Since each of these perspectives has a certain assumption concerning the processes of the creation and the reduction of dissonance, they present different predictions under identical conditions.  Specifically, they exhibit contradictory predictions about the role of the self-esteem on processes of cognitive dissonance.  A sample of 150 undergraduate psychology students were selected via purposeful sampling and assigned to five groups: four experimental and one control groups.  The participants faced cognitive dissonance through Induced Compliance Paradigm.  According to the predictions of the SSM, then, interventions were introduced to make a number of self-attributes accessible to the subjects and eventually their dissonance reduction was measured.  Data analyses reveal that in the groups for which neutral self-attributes had been accessible; self-esteem did not have any role in reducing dissonance.  In other groups, however, the role of self-esteem was influential.  The findings support the predictions of SSM. Furthermore, there is an interesting cross-cultural finding; the group for which normative self-standards had been accessible showed significantly more attitude change than other groups.  This can indicate the cultural influence of collectivism in Iran.
