Özet: European Union has set environmental protection as one of its top policy priorities. EU environmental policy includes goals and measures of environmental protection in the field of protection of endangered species, natural habitats, effective and efficient use of natural resources, protection of water resources and air and waste management. Most studies deal with air pollution and climate change policies, whereas other top priority policy areas, in particular waste prevention is not so thoroughly researched. The aim of this paper is to examine the relationship between environmental taxes, environmental expenditures and waste pollution in selected EU Member States by applying the methodology of panel data with simultaneous equations models (SEMs). Using methodology suggested by Wooldridge (2003) we showed that higher environmental taxes and expenditures for environmental waste cause lower level of waste. This effect is not very pronounced, however we may count it as statistically significant. Further, it was shown that higher environmental impacts are measurable, because higher waste pollution leads to increased taxation. The methodological approach used here has clear advantages, as it is very simple compared with a CGE modelling. It is quite perspective for the swift and inexpensive use in practice.
