The inhibition effect of three different pharmaceuticals in domestic wastewater

Özet: Domestic wastewaters, which are a kind of wastewaters, include pollutants such as nitrogen, phosphor, carbon and also other substances such as pesticides, polycyclic aromatics and pharmaceuticals. The pharmaceuticals could affect the treatment efficiency of microorganisms in biological domestic wastewater treatment plants. The lower is the efficiency, the lower the treatment quality of wastewater. In this study, three different pharmaceuticals, which are caffeine, acetaminophen and theophylline were analyzed at two different concentrations (100 and 500 µl/L). These pharmaceuticals could be found in domestic wastewaters. Dehydrogenase enzyme test, which could be used a general indicator for inhibition on microorganism and Toxtrak™ inhibition test, which could show the inhibition or toxicity levels on microorganisms, were used to determine the inhibition effect of the chemicals. According to the results, caffeine was showed maximum inhibition effect increasing concentrations. The inhibition effect of theophylline, which is a metabolite of caffeine, compared to caffeine. The inhibition results of caffeine and theophylline were approximately same for 100 µl/L concentration. However, the inhibition effect of caffeine decreased at 500 µl/L. The Toxtrak™ inhibition test results of acetaminophen showed less toxic effect at both concentrations compared to caffeine and theophylline. Dehydrogenase enzyme results were showed that the three pharmaceuticals at two different concentrations have affected the efficiency of microorganisms.
