Özet: The present study aimed at investigating the effect of portfolio assessment on metacognitive reading strategy awareness of university students. To achieve this goal, 60 male university students from Azad University of Bonab were selected to participate in the study. The instruments used in the study consist of: (a) Metacognitive Awareness of Reading Strategies Inventory (MARSI) questionnaire, and (b) student’s portfolios. The results gained through SPSS, explored a significant difference between the experimental and control groups in terms of using metacognitive reading strategy awareness for reading. The findings assured the inclusion of alternative assessment techniques, namely, portfolio assessment in assessment and instruction.
