Reading of expository texts: Challenges and needs of novice readers of Pakistan

Özet: This study aimed at investigating the difficulties of the novice readers (intermediate level students) which face them while they read expository texts and their needs to become successful readers of expository texts. The common hurdles in the path of the students were found to be the lack of awareness and understanding of text structure, new information, high readability level of the text and abstract concepts. The intermediate level students of four different colleges were examined regarding their performance in identifying central ideas, text structure, key points for summarizing, supporting details, cohesion and coherence, and text-based questions. The students’ knowledge and skills on the said aspects of expository reading was found roughly 25% of the required level. Considering the level of students’ competency in expository reading and discussion on their performance, a number of strategies were determined employing which the students could improve their reading skills for expository texts.
