Özet: Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is an enabling technology in the telecommunications. In this paper, we focus on the multi rate transmission aspect of VoIP over Wireless LANs (VoWLAN). Non-adaptive systems continue with a fix bit rate codec even in lower transmission rate. Since a codec generates a constant output of bit rate, independent of network condition, when there is a lack of available bandwidth, congestions will occur, resulting in the packets being delayed or dropped. To address this, we introduce an optimized adaptive rate control algorithm which uses MAC layer information and Real-Time Control Protocol (RTCP) packets to monitor the link and identifies rate changing and speech quality degradation and accordingly employs codec switching with different packetization interval. The proposed algorithm works effectively for transmission of voice over WLAN.
