Özet:   This paper discusses recent findings on the effects of different columns, headings, and illustrated pictures on seven college level students’ comprehension in online reading. This qualitative research approach administers a set of instruments (layout questionnaire and interview) to measure the students’ preferences on four diverse layouts and employs an eye tracking device to collect the data. The effects of the presence of illustrated picture were also scrutinized. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the results showed that participants comprehend the online text better and was read faster using the double column instead of the single column layout. Layout with headings helped the participants to comprehend the text better. Findings also showed the illustrated pictures were clear and supported the textual materials, but was not a factor in helping the participants to comprehend the text better. Participants were able to understand the text even when the pictures were absent.
