Özet: Enabled by modern information technologies, a new way of organizing the innovation process is emerging. This is the increasing use of online open innovation intermediary platforms. The visions are far-reaching: online intermediaries have the potential to change the way knowledge-intensive development is done and how knowledge-based work is distributed globally. The success of online intermediary platforms depends on the solvers who do the actual work of finding the solutions but very little is known of the solvers. The objective of the study was to get more knowledge of solvers in online open innovation intermediary platforms. The study is based on analyses of over 100 winning solvers and over 9,000 registered solvers. The solvers were highly educated. Experts in low-income developing countries had benefited relatively more than corresponding experts in high-income developed countries. Solving online challenges can grow into an attractive profession option for experts especially in lower income countries.
