Usability Evaluation of a New Set-Top Box System

Özet: With the aim of trying to compete in the interactive television market, interactive TV service providers try to differentiate themselves from their competitors by offering new features. However, offering new functionalities is not always enough to increase user satisfaction. A functionality-focused interface design may result in the ineffective use of the provided features. Since functionality and usability are interrelated, there is usually a trade-off between them. In this study, customers’ satisfaction as well as the designed GUI screens of a set-top box system was measured using a questionnaire that was based on the IBM computer usability satisfaction questionnaire. Data were collected from 395 respondents. Results indicated that customers were generally satisfied with the usability of the new system, showing an average score higher than 5. The lowest scored statement, with 4.24 points, was related to information quality, showing that users do not strongly agree that the error messages provided by the interface clearly tell them how to fix their problems.
