Özet: This case study examines the influence of the web-based learning environment Cell World on learners’ visual literacy skills – to analyse visual information and translate from one form to another. The French biology curriculum, but not the Estonian one, emphasizes the development of these skills. 260 French and 257 Estonian high school students used two models of the Cell World environment. The pre- and post-test measured their visual literacy skills. The French and Estonian students’ initial levels of visual literacy were comparable. The skills in analysing and translating visual information were developed in both groups as the result of modelling activities.
