Özet: One of the feared problems associated with the chemical industry is the risk of thermal runaway, the accumulation of heat increases temperature and pressure in the reaction process which lead to runaway reaction and accident. Seveso and Bhopal are such industrial disasters that reflect the destructive potential of the phenomenon of thermal runaway regarding humans, environment and economy. Thus, the thermal runaway behaviour of any exothermic chemical system is of great importance for the design and operation of a chemical process. The aim of this paper is to propose an approach for studying the mechanism of thermal runaway related to exothermic chemical reaction, the methodology used to develop this work is based on four steps. The first step is to apply the HAZOP method to identify risk factors that can lead to thermal runaway phenomenon, in the second step we study the behaviour of these parameters during the evolution of the system, the modelling tool allows us to obtain curves of variation of these parameters. In the third step we determine for each of the parameters studied the limit value that can reach each parameter and beyond which the thermal runaway can take place. Finally, in the last step we apply the method of Karnaugh table to obtain a model of runaway scenarios.
