Textual vs. Visual Programming - a Survey of Undergraduate Students

Özet: For a long time the industrial control instrumentation programming was based on the theory of digital circuits. However, as the technology advances, control systems tend to complicate, and have to be developed with general purpose programming languages. In this paper, results of the survey are presented, which was conducted among students at the authors' department. Students' opinions on differences between textual (MATLAB) and graphical (LabVIEW) programming of models, simulators and control systems were gathered and are discussed in comparison to the similar survey conducted among professional software developers. From the differences between the results the impact of the specific curriculum is determined, and concluding remarks are drawn on teaching of IEC61131 and IEC61499 compliant graphical programming languages.
