Özet: Higher education institutions are major players in every economy, as they are responsible for educating and developing the next generation of decision makers in all areas of the economy. In the modern society, thanks to the rapid development of new technologies, teaching in higher education has changed dramatically in recent times. Prominent among these changes is the use of technology to supplement traditional teaching methods (Samarawickrema & Benson 2004). One great challenge higher education sectors face, is how to reach students in open distance learning (ODL) environments who are diverse in terms of their academic, social, language, regional and geographical backgrounds. Modern tools such as podcasts are being used at the University of South Africa to afford academics the opportunity of improving and exploring ways in which information can be conveyed to students. A staff development project at UNISA was carried out to, showcase the way in which the use of podcasts can be positively used in teaching and learning. Potential benefits of the use of podcasts were identified, one of which was the motivation of academics in the teaching and learning process.
