Özet: The purpose of treating ballast water in naval transport is to avoid the non-native organisms and microorganisms entering and creating environmental disasters in the new habitat. One of the multiple methods of treating consists in killing microorganisms by heating. This study’s aim is to find the optimum type of heat exchanger for heating and keeping the temperature at a constant value based on the design of the ballast tank and on the various environmental conditions. Depending on the amount of heat flow lost through the external walls of the tank and the rate of distribution of the heat inside the tank it will be possible to choose the type of heat exchanger, which helps optimizing the cost for treating the ballast water. The perspectives concern the time for treating the entire amount of ballast water, which should not be greater than the period of time between the ports of call.
