Özet: Information technologies were celebrated as the supreme core competences of a firm. It was thought that if the newest trends had been applied properly that would have led the company to reach higher customer satisfaction and profitability. This idea was proved not to be valid. The information technologies have changed the market and the competition significantly, but rather than being the core competence itself, it has become an important asset to emphasize the core competences of a firm. Implementing new IT solutions is expensive so choosing the right combination of them and deciding the proper extent of online presence are crucial to remain competitive. The goal of this paper is to present how the relevant models of strategy formulation adopt the affects of information technologies and to highlight the importance of the co-working of the managers responsible for strategy formulation and the IT department. The IT solutions are useless if they do not support the strategy of the company, but on the other hand during strategy formulation managers should evaluate how IT solutions affected the market, and based on that they should define in the new environment what could be their core competences.
