Özet: This manuscript is a discussion paper highlighting the information dimension of health “informatics”. The vast advancements in information and communications technology (ICT) have provided better information systems with large data storage facilities and much faster data transfer. The downside however, has been that the information systems installed by different groups within the health sector do not necessarily communicate with each other. New Zealand appears to be more advanced by international comparisons, but even in New Zealand communication between information systems is selective. In this paper (i) we argue that one of the main benefits of technological advancements is the capacity to communicate, (ii) we encourage enabling communication between patients information systems and other information systems to develop a health informatics system and not purely an ill-health system, (iii) we present a conceptual model where an appropriately designed unified database can act as a gateway to serve the information needs of the public and health care professionals, and to improve communication between various health and social care agencies.
