Özet: Automation improves the production process by means of reduction of human participation in the overall process in general, and specific activities in particular. Automation is based on application of several tools, methods, or techniques focused on control of industrial devices, processes, and mechanisms. Barcode and optical character recognition reading was added on this list many years ago. However, several issues still remain unsolved. This paper deals with machine vision and barcode and character scanning by means of automation technology. It describes the principle and use of machine vision, parts of cameras and types of lighting. It discusses the most common types of barcodes and datamatrix codes, and basic principles of optical pattern recognition. The paper also characterizes selected types of smart cameras, and barcode and character readers. The development of an automated system for bar code and character scanning with optical character recognition camera, consequent tests, and discussion of acquired results are stated in the paper. Moreover, further research pathways are also depicted.
