Özet: In this study, it is aimed to find whether explicit grammar instruction can help Turkish speakers of English avoid run-on sentences. Using an accurate grammar in writing is an important aspect of learning and teaching a foreign language. It is vital that in our writings, we have to maintain clarity and avoid ambiguity in expression. A run-on sentence is a structural flaw that can plague even a very short sentence, and it should be avoided from every kind of second language writing. The sampling of the study consisted of 20 freshman students studying at English Language Teaching (ELT) Department in Hacettepe University. One group experimental pre-test post-test research design has been applied. After getting pre-test scores, an explicit grammar instruction has been conducted. Then, a post-test was applied and scored. Pre-test scores and post-test scores of the participants have been correlated with Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test and the significance point is .000 (p<.05). It can be said that if the students receive focused instructional treatment on problematic areas, they can improve their grammatical competence.
