Özet: Some of you may remember dictation from your schooldays with pleasure while some of you probably thought it was a very boring exercise. Despite its benefits, currently dictation is not widely used in teaching English mainly because some language practitioners consider it teacher-centered and old-fashioned.The reasons for advocating the use of dictation are its encouragement to focus learners’ attention on form and involve listening (to the teacher read the text), reading (the original text), and writing (e.g., spelling). In a word, dictation offers a context-rich method of displaying learners’ linguistic competence and involves the knowledge about the content of the text. In most cases, the instructor read a passage, then dictated and then read it a third time so you could double check what you had written down. This is the traditional definition of dictation. Even today there are people who support dictation because they feel it is very useful ,but many consider it a meaningless exercise, mechanical, boring and old fashioned not to mention ,irrelevant (not authentic) in everyday life .Dictation has been widely known as a testing device for measuring language proficiency. However, using dictation as a language testing technique has suffered huge oppositions. Dictation has been used in language learning for several hundred years, and methodologists have often made pedagogical claims for its value. For Davis and Rinvolucri dictation means "Decoding the sounds of [English] and recoding them in writing is a major learning task" and Frodesen says that dictation can be "an effective way to address grammatical errors in writing that may be the result of erroneous aural perception of English.... Dictation can help students to diagnose and correct these kinds of errors as well as others." Montalvan concludes "as students develop their aural comprehension of meaning and also of the relationship among segments of language, they are learning grammar." (1990:54) Dictation is a valuable language learning device that has been used for centuries. Its advantages are numerous. The most common are that dictation can help students to diagnose and correct their mistakes.206
