Özet: The effect of transverse impact on energy absorption behavior of a column under axial impact loading was numerically investigated using finite element analysis. A column under axial impact was subjected to transverse impact to instantaneously reduce its structure stiffness. Absorption of the axial impact energy increased due to post-buckling deformation being enlarged by transverse impact, though the axial impact load decreased. It is confirmed that a transverse impact could increase the axial energy absorption of a column without losing any structure stiffness or static strength. The same concept is utilized in vehicle frame, by applying transverse load on axially loaded members, so that accident impact energy absorption is improved. Results showed that applying transverse load on axial loaded frame members increase absorbed energy by those members.
