Evaluating Electronic Portfolio in Pharmacology Teaching

Özet: Learning of complex and wide materials of basic sciences such as clinical pharmacology course is a challenging problem for undergraduate students. Therefore, finding an effective method to enhance learning, recalling and applying of knowledge has a major impact on their patient care. Paper and web-based portfolios have been used in teaching and assessment and could enhance reflective learning and knowledge management (KM) processes including capturing and creating developing, sharing, organizing, and using. In this study, effects of implementing of an electronic portfolio on KM processes in teaching of pharmacology were measured. In this quasi-experimental study, 72 students of nursing, surgical technology, emergency provider, and medical programs were participated. An electronic portfolio was uploaded on Website of Birjand University Of medical sciences for each session and students must perform and return it until next week for feedback. A questioner based on four aspects of KM was completed by students and analyzed at the end of course. Mean value of their knowledge management was 99.2639 ±20.58, capturing and creating developing, sharing, organizing and using was 35.9487± 8.45, 22.7901±5.04, 17.5679± 4.42, and 23±5.03, respectively. There was significant difference (P<0.05) between programs and elements of KM except for use of knowledge (p>0.05). The overall acceptability and impact of this method was 98% according to student`s viewpoints. According to this results and written feedback of students, it seems that this method can be used in pharmacology teaching and other similar courses. Further research is needed to implement the best content of E-portfolio for each program.
